Artist's Description

Wow, it was a scorcher today in Vancouver -- at least compared to recently. A completely cloudless day with highs of 28 degrees was a stark contrast to the end of last week, when it was barely half as warm.

The lack of clouds made for a fairly ordinary sunset, so (after checking for inconveniently-moored cargo ships), I headed back to North Vancouver to get the shot I'd hoped to get a few days ago.

The clear sky made for a very blue 'blue hour' photo, which contrasted nicely with the sodium lighting under this gazebo in Waterfront Park. The water in the harbour is very rarely smooth enough to get perfect reflections, but the relative calm made for some nice scattering of the lights of downtown Vancouver.

This was originally a 6 photo panorama, although I cropped it down to about 3.5 photos in the end.

About Alexis Birkill

Alexis Birkill

Born in the UK, I moved to Vancouver, BC in 2011. My career in photography has grown from a long-held passion for capturing the beauty of the world, aided on the technical side by my background as a software developer. I specialise in fine art photography of landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes in and around the Pacific Northwest, with work exhibited internationally. Many of my photographs feature the beautiful city of Vancouver, but as well as capturing its iconic cityscapes, I can often be found exploring the BC and Washington coastline for new photographic opportunities, as well as developing my portfolio of night sky photographs featuring the Milky Way and the Aurora Borealis.
