Artist's Description
The rays of the sun peek out from behind the rocks of Lighthouse Park in West Vancouver, as we were treated to a beautiful sunset.
I left this trip a little to the last minute, and the trails in Lighthouse Park were rather busy with families enjoying the long weekend, so I only just managed to catch this shot. I had to extend my tripod centre column all the way up (which I very rarely do) to get the last rays of the sun before the disappeared.
This is a location I've photographed a few times before, but it's such a beautiful spot I find myself going again and again, despite the trip back up the hill with a bag full of camera gear always reminding me that I'm not as in shape as I should be!
A narrow aperture of f/16 provoked the rays from the sun, and I used HDR to capture the dynamic range of the scene, using seven shots with exposure times ranging from 1/1250th of a second to 0.8 seconds.
About Alexis Birkill
Born in the UK, I moved to Vancouver, BC in 2011. My career in photography has grown from a long-held passion for capturing the beauty of the world, aided on the technical side by my background as a software developer. I specialise in fine art photography of landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes in and around the Pacific Northwest, with work exhibited internationally. Many of my photographs feature the beautiful city of Vancouver, but as well as capturing its iconic cityscapes, I can often be found exploring the BC and Washington coastline for new photographic opportunities, as well as developing my portfolio of night sky photographs featuring the Milky Way and the Aurora Borealis.
