Artist's Description

The Gastown steam clock on a foggy evening in Vancouver, photographed just after midnight. The streets were deserted on this cold, damp Sunday evening, a stark contrast to daytime when this clock is usually surrounded by tourists.

The clock is powered by Vancouver's centralised steam heating system, and marks every quarter hour (during the day) via the whistles on top of the clock.

About Alexis Birkill

Alexis Birkill

Born in the UK, I moved to Vancouver, BC in 2011. My career in photography has grown from a long-held passion for capturing the beauty of the world, aided on the technical side by my background as a software developer. I specialise in fine art photography of landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes in and around the Pacific Northwest, with work exhibited internationally. Many of my photographs feature the beautiful city of Vancouver, but as well as capturing its iconic cityscapes, I can often be found exploring the BC and Washington coastline for new photographic opportunities, as well as developing my portfolio of night sky photographs featuring the Milky Way and the Aurora Borealis.
