Artist's Description

BC Place is a stadium located in downtown Vancouver, and was built as part of the preparations for Expo '86.

Until 2010 it had the world's largest air-supported dome, with the stadium being pressurised inside to support the weight of the roof. It has since been converted to have a retractable roof, along with other renovations.

This was taken from the Olympic Village on the other side of False Creek from the downtown core. The area, formerly industrial areas and car parks, was developed as part of the 2010 Winter Olympics, and now has many residential buildings, restaurants and shops. The dock in the foreground provides access to water taxis which provide a quick route to downtown areas as well as Granville Island.

About Alexis Birkill

Alexis Birkill

Born in the UK, I moved to Vancouver, BC in 2011. My career in photography has grown from a long-held passion for capturing the beauty of the world, aided on the technical side by my background as a software developer. I specialise in fine art photography of landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes in and around the Pacific Northwest, with work exhibited internationally. Many of my photographs feature the beautiful city of Vancouver, but as well as capturing its iconic cityscapes, I can often be found exploring the BC and Washington coastline for new photographic opportunities, as well as developing my portfolio of night sky photographs featuring the Milky Way and the Aurora Borealis.
