Artist's Description

After getting my feet well and truly soaked photographing the sea at sunset, it seemed like a good idea to go and stand in near-freezing temperatures for a couple of hours, just up the coast at Porteau Cove Provincial Park.

With a strong wind blowing it was extremely cold, but the first clear night we've had in weeks provided an incredible view.

I was extremely pleased with how the Milky Way turned out, and the Big Dipper is clearly visible near the horizon just to the right of centre. Light domes are from the cities of Nanaimo (I think) on the left and Squamish on the right.

About Alexis Birkill

Alexis Birkill

Born in the UK, I moved to Vancouver, BC in 2011. My career in photography has grown from a long-held passion for capturing the beauty of the world, aided on the technical side by my background as a software developer. I specialise in fine art photography of landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes in and around the Pacific Northwest, with work exhibited internationally. Many of my photographs feature the beautiful city of Vancouver, but as well as capturing its iconic cityscapes, I can often be found exploring the BC and Washington coastline for new photographic opportunities, as well as developing my portfolio of night sky photographs featuring the Milky Way and the Aurora Borealis.
